SUMMERTIME AND YOUR BEAUTY IS EASY

Friday, June 14th, 2013

Glamour, glitz, and glowing are the buzz words for summer 2013.

The colors in fashion almost always make their way onto the face.  This season’s bright and pretty pinks, corals, yellows, greens and shades of gold, in makeup are taken right from the runway clothing designers.

Gold is the color associated with Hollywood – and since this season’s hair is all about the glam  – with roller sets, and big sexy curls ala the movie stars tresses – of course gold should be sprinkled in the makeup.  Gold, bronze, or silver flecks can be seen in everything from eye shadow, blush, bronzer, lipstick, and lip gloss to even body lotion and powder – is going to be a huge seasonal hit.  Think of the sun glistening off the water, and this year we are going to be wearing it – catching our own sun beam reflections.

Pink is flattering on everyone.  If you are in the cool family choose a pink that is valentine in color, if you are warm, a peachy pink with look fabulous.  Wear it on the eyes, the cheeks, and of course the lips.

Eye shadows are being shown in green – both military green as well as kiwi – yellows, and turquoise, with eyeliners in color that coordinate.   Add lots and lots of mascara to lengthen and thicken.  If you dare – even false eyelashes in the daytime are so right now!

Blush is back.  Sweeping upward and inward from the apple of the cheeks to the temple area – in hues ranging from lighter pinks to deepest mauves.

Lips are shiny and sexy.  Lip gloss – think patent leather looking shiny.  Lipsticks are taking the tone of rich color with a bit of lightness via the flecks of shine added.

But the one thing to remember about any beauty trend is NOTHING will look good on poor skin.  The skin underneath the makeup is what will always show.  You would not think of exercising hard for an hour and right away – with out bathing – put on an evening dress – would you?  Then don’t put makeup on an uncared for face.  Cleanse, tone, and hydrate 2 X a day.

Have fun with this summer’s makeup – remember – makeup is like making a sandcastle at the beach – every night it washes away with the tide!  But it was fun while it lasted!

SMILEY FACE

Sunday, September 2nd, 2012

You are no doubt familiar with the phrase of “the eyes are the windows on the sole.”  While the statement is on the right track, “the sole window” must include “the smile.”  You can tell far more about a person from their smile.

According to Marianne LaFrance, author of “Lip Service: Smiles in Life, Death, Trust, Lies, Work, Memory, Sex, and Politics,” knowing how to read a smile can be very eye opening.

Real versus Fake? In a real smile, the cheeks rise and crow’s feet appear.  In a fake smile, only the mouth is involved.  Also, a real smile comes onto the face in a relaxed way and stays only a few seconds.  A fake smile looks like it’s snapped on and is held in place too long.

What’s the difference between a smile and a smirk?  Authentic smiles are symmetrical.  Both sides of the mouth curve up equally.  A smirk is asymmetrical—the curve is more pronounced on one side.  It communicates contempt, says LaFrance.

Men versus Women’s smiles?  Women smile more than men.  They also have larger smile muscles, which has led scientists to ponder whether women smile more because of their face muscles or if those muscles are developed because women are encouraged to smile more.  As a note: Women are also much better at reading a smile.

Does Botox have any effect on smiling?  Botox can paralyze the muscles involved in real smiles.  During a genuine smile, the hormone oxytocin is released, causing a feeling of well-being.  You can’t get this from a fake smile… Botox or no Botox!

In the case of a genuine smile…faking it until you make it….is a lot like wearing clear lip gloss…why even bother?

Here Are Some Tips To Get A Red Carpet Worthy Photo In A Flash!

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

There are cameras everywhere these days, and pictures of you end up on Facebook and other social media networks mere moments after they’re taken. Sometimes you don’t have enough time to untag them before it’s too late, and everyone has seen you looking your worst!

Like the old saying goes, “A picture is worth a 1,000 words.” I want to add to that ~ And least a $1,000 or more dollars of instant credibility…or lack of!

Helpful hints to help you look your fabulous best when facing the flashbulbs:

Find Your Best Angle. Experiment by posing in the mirror. It will quickly become obvious which angles are your most flattering. Once you know your best angles, you will be ready to pose before the flash pops.

Chin Up. The dreaded double chin…yikes!  The worst…even if you don’t have one, you’ve probably been caught on camera with an angle that
made chin mountains out of molehills. Here is a super simple remedy, stick your chin out and slightly pulled away from your neck. It feels awkward, but the
camera cannot detect the proportion of how far you pull out your chin. This makes your jawline look stronger, lessening the dreadful double chin look.

Look Longer And Leaner. You’ll rarely see a celebrity standing full face forward to the camera. To help your body look its longest and leanest,
think of a Miss America traditional pose. When you angle your body a bit to the side, you can take down several inches off your torso. The key is to put one
foot in front of the other, and of course smile. No Queen wave necessary.

• Put Your Hand On Your Hip. Not like the Hokey Pokey, but it’s great posing advice that Hollywood Stars are very hip to as well. To make
your hips look slimmer, pull your body forward from the waist up slightly towards the camera. Put one or both of your hands on your hips. Your arms will
look more toned as you will be flexing your muscle slightly when you are holding them on your hips.

No One Likes A Faker. Genuine smiles only! Avoid the totally fake it out smiles that are so often capture forever on film by thinking of the camera
lens as a person you genuinely like and are happy to see. If you are posing for a series of photos, don’t keep holding your smile ~ your mouth will start
shaking and you will know it’s not natural. My best trick to keep smiling natural is to move my jaw around between pictures – in my case, you might want
to give your photographer a heads up, as when I do this exercise, I look like I am chewing on a leather shoe!

• What in the world should I wear? Wear solid colors in photos. Don’t wear shiny material as it reflects light and can make even the slightest budge look much bigger than it is. A professional makeup application is a must! The camera doesn’t miss a thing, and you only have a flash bulb instant to forever be caught on camera!

Relax…Pose… and Smile…as now you are totally ready for your Paparazzi close ups!

Channeling Chanel

Sunday, November 6th, 2011

For nearly a century, Coco Chanel has been synonymous with just about every piece of clothing that we consider stylish ~ lots of other items that perhaps, you have not even given a second thought!

You only have to take a peek inside your closet to see shadows of Chanel.  If you have a stash of jackets that you toss over jeans to help your class up your casual – that’s very Chanel.  Of course, it goes without saying that any black dress is the top branch of Chanel’s design family tree!

But did you know that Coco Chanel is responsible for actual pockets in clothing, bell-bottoms, twin sets, belted cardigans, drop waists, short dresses as evening wear, sportswear – yes, even sportswear as we know it, started at the House of Chanel.

And who could forget – accessories galore!!  Basically everything in your closet that has simple lines, skims over the body, is easy to move in, and is simple…so lots of jewelry can be worn without the worry of ever being overdone.

Here are some of my favorite Coco quotes on how Chanel put the Class in Classic!

“It’s always better to be slightly underdressed.”
Overdressing is the first cousin of trying too hard.  It is like shouting out loud that you don’t trust yourself or your clothes to “fit in.”

“All you have to do is subtract.”
Simplicity will forever be in style.  Take a look at yourself in a full length mirror before leaving the house to see what you look like both coming and going.  If it’s too much, take something off.

“One shouldn’t spend all one’s time dressing.  All one needs are two or three suits, as long as they and everything to go with them, are perfect.”
Every beautiful piece in your closet should go with every other fabulous piece.  After all, don’t you have better things to do than fret about fashion?

“Style is knowing who you are, what you want to say, and not giving a damn.”
This quote is not Coco’s, but Gore Vidal, who was expressing why Chanel was so perfect.   Coco embraced loving yourself first, dressing accordingly ~ as it will always show.
In honor of Chanel’s philosophy of Classy and Fabulous, I along, with my BFF, Mary Foley, have put together a Holiday Glam Event titled “Rock What You Got!” If you would like to hear more of “Wow! LASH OUT LOUD ~ THE GREAT! THE HUH? AND THE DOWNRIGHT FUNNY!

Friday, August 26th, 2011

THE GREAT!

Happy 40th birthday, Great Lash Mascara!  Forty years ago Maybelline New York introduced women to Great Lash Mascara, and a love affair began.  The pink and green tube continues to be America’s #1 selling mascara, with over 20 million pieces sold each year.  Passed from generation to generation, devotees remain true to the beloved formula for perfectly defined, thick, conditioned lashes.  Maybe that is why a tube of Great Lash is sold every 1.7 seconds in the US.

Great Lash’s history is rooted in fashion.  In 1971, Lilly Pulitzer, a then up-and-coming designer known for her bright and cherry fabrics, inspired Great Lash’s legendary pink and green tube.  The unique color palette has become instantly recognizable and the symbol of an American beauty icon.

THE HUH?

First let me stress that I am a big fan of CHANEL in all ways.  Classic, yet modern, elegant, yet understated, expensive yet considered priceless.  However, I am not at all convinced that the brand new, limited edition, Recourbe Cils De CHANEL Precision Eyelash Curler is worth the price of $34.00!

Sure it comes in a swanky CHANEL black box, and is CHANEL Black in color instead standard silver and plastic shrink-wrapped cardboard, hung on a wall display – but to cost 17 times more than my little ol’ $2.00 Revlon lash curler, that looks the same, and operates the same….I have to say HUH?

THE DOWNRIGHT FUNNY!

Okay, car sunglasses make sense, but I am rolling my eyes at this new car accessory called Carlashes!  It’s a pair of stick-on lashes for your car headlights.  They come in black, silver sparkly, and even pink!

I have seen a couple of cars with the Carlashes, and have to say it does make you smile and laugh out loud!  Makes me wonder what’s next….auto-mascara?

A Healthy Foundation ~ For A Healthy Foundation

Saturday, October 23rd, 2010

Choosing the best makeup foundation for yourself can be challenging ~ even for skincare experts!  Especially when you look at all of the zillions of different brands, formulas and types!

Everything from powder, liquid, stick, crème, and even air-brushed in a spray-on bottle!  Adding to the mix are the many different skin condition formulas: dry, aging, oily, combination, sensitive and normal.  And of course, there is the coverage factor to consider: sheer, light, medium, full, and even camouflage!  It is enough to make you say yikes!

With so many choices – how can you choose wisely and healthy?  Believe it or not, just a little bit of research is all you need to reveal the perfect foundation for your skin.

First – You need to determine your skin condition.  For the very best skin condition analysis, I recommend a consultation with an Esthetician near you.  The Esthetician will look at your skin under a “loop” which is a lighted magnifying glass to see your skin up close and personal.  Also sometimes a “Woods Lamp” is used showing the skin surface via a black light and magnifying glass.

In the meantime, while waiting for your appointment with your Esthetician, here is a quick- although less scientific method, to determine your skin’s condition:

Tonight after your evening beauty regime of cleansing, and treating your skin, as you are getting ready for your nightly ‘beauty sleep’ – place three clean tissues on your nightstand.

First thing the next morning before getting out of bed, take the tissues, one at a time, and gently rub one across your forehead, one across your nose and cheeks, and the last one across your chin.  Remove the tissues and review them.

  • Normal skin      Tissue will show little to no oil on it.  Skin does not feel tight or flaky.
  • Dry Skin:            Tissue will show no oil on it, but skin feels dry and taut after tissue removal.
  • Oil Skin:              Tissue shows oily areas and skin’s surface could still remain oily to the touch.
  • Combo Skin:     Some tissues reflect oily areas such as forehead and nose areas, while cheeks/chin feel dry/tight.
  • Sensitive Skin: Skin feels irritated and possibly looks red and/or blotchy after removing tissue.

Secondly – Decide which type of foundation you like.  Is it crème, liquid, powder, stick, mineral, etc.?  Next decide what coverage you prefer.  These are truly a matter of personal preference – based on what you like, and what feels best on your skin.

Thirdly – But without a doubt - the most important step is to check the label for ingredients!  For the healthiest foundation, make sure that your foundation choice is free of:

  • Parabens
  • Mineral Oil
  • Petrolatum
  • Phthalates
  • Sodium lauryl sulfate
  • Synthetic dyes
  • Synthetic Fragrance
  • Not Tested on Animals
  • And is Dermatologist and clinically tested

As for SPF (Sun Protection Factor) – The best place to have SPF is on your face – either in your foundation, or topically applied after your skincare regime, if you are sans makeup.   In order to work, a SPF cannot be IN your skincare products – as skincare products are meant to go into the skin!  SPF doesn’t do any good – inside your skin – to work SPF needs to be up, front, and center, shielding and protecting the skin!

And Lastly, if your skin could use a little extra age-defying ingredients, look for foundation formulas with multi-mineral complex of Magnesium, Zinc, Copper, and Lysine as well as vitamins like A and E that protect the skin against free radical damage while moisturizing and protecting the skin.

What Does Your Makeup Bag Reveal? ~ Is It Time To Come Clean?

Sunday, June 6th, 2010

Chances are you have a makeup bag for your purse.  Also chances are that it has been a while since you really took a look at all of the stuff you have stuffed inside of your handy, dandy makeup bag – if you are like most.

Makeup bags often become a cluttered and disorganized mess.  If you find yourself spending more time digging and searching your bag’s contents than you do applying what is inside – perhaps it is time for a Makeup Bag Makeover!

Like a good handbag, a good makeup bag, should carry the daily essential items that you will need when you are out and about.  Here are some easy tips to streamline your beauty on the go makeup bag essentials and simplify your traveling touch ups!

Schedule a little time and find a surface where you can spread everything out from inside your bag.  Although it won’t take that long, you don’t want to rush through.

You will need a cleaning cloth, or paper towels, a bottle of glass cleaner to clean the product containers, and some anti-bacterial soap for your brushes.

Evaluate what you apply daily and what you don’t.  What do you use a lot and what products you only use on special occasions – take a few moments to separate them:

Daily Wear – These are your basic colors that match almost anything you decide to wear to any given time and place – like powder to take away the shine, blush if you tend to fade, a couple of  lip colors that are universal, mascara, and a neutral eyeliner, and lip liner if you use them.

(Of course your trusty travel makeup mirror with both a regular and a 5X magnifying side, as well as a pair of good tweezers are automatically assumed as a makeup bag  must-have!)

Special Occasion – This includes more dramatic colors, infrequently worn products you purchased to match special outfits, wild colors used for Halloween, shimmer dance club powder, the free gift gloss that you swear you are going to someday wear – and anything else you rarely, if ever, wear.

Okay, it is time to face the truth ~ and dispose of anything that is out of style, old, broken, or causes irritation…………..Which I must say Lordy Day ~  I will never understand why ~ in the world would any woman seeking to be her best beautiful self – keep old, broken, stubs and nubs and/or held together with a rubber-band cosmetic products around in the first place?!?   TOSS THEM!

Look at your makeup application tools.  Are they sufficient?  Dirty?  Floating around in the bottom of the bag?  Tools left to fend for themselves quickly become dirty and bacteria filled.  Used facial sponges and those annoying little applicators that come with the product – all need to go.  Your investment in good, clean, washable cosmetic brushes is well worth the price of your beauty.

By using clean brushes you can extend the life of your makeup and brushes by eliminating the amount of bacteria and oils that are naturally transferred from the skin to the applicators.

Keeping your brushes in their own bag will keep them organized, protect the brush ends and help keep them cleaner.

Examine your piles and try to gauge what size bag you will need.  If you don’t have something big enough or with the necessary pockets – it’s time for a new bag. Best bets are ones that zip close, and have a waterproof lining – that way if something inside does bite the dust, at least the dust will implode – and not explode all over inside your totally darling handbag!

There are tons of really cute, affordable, makeup bags in all sort of shops from boutique to drugstores – I say go for the fun ones!

But Wait!  Before you pile your pile back into your bag – really take a look at each product.  Do you love it?  Do you use it lots?  Does it make you look fabulous?  If so, it can stay, if not – need to send it out the door – remember for beauty – it is always best to ‘Just say no – to so-so! And always Hello to Beautiful!’

Ridding your bag of excessive baggage will make your beauty on the go so much more enjoyable and with less stuff to sift and search for – will make it quicker too!

For those with excess product guilt – why not bundle up all of your over-bought, under-used, and all of the free gift with purchase products hanging around – and take them to a women’s shelter ~ that way you ease your guilt, streamline your beauty regime and you help another women be beautiful too!

DON’T RESOLUTE YOUR 2010 BEAUTY GOALS….ABSOLVE THEM!

Monday, January 11th, 2010

2010 dateHow many times have your heard the words “New Years Resolutions” so far during 2010?  I venture to say plenty!  Even when statistics show that about 90% plus of all resolutions – new years or otherwise, will be broken before a month has past, lots of us still feel the need to make them.  Of course the media adds to frenzy with all of the “New Year – New You” articles and shows.  I have to admit, I have certainly made my share of best laid plans in New Years past.

This year however, instead of making a bunch of well-intended – yet short- lived ‘resolution goals,’ I am opting for a few realistic, achievable Absolve beauty goals!  There is a difference!  Resolute means to: make a formal statement or intent.  Absolve on the other hand means: to set free from obligation or the consequence of guilt.  Wow – just reading the meaning eases my guilt! no_guilt

So now that the guilt is gone, it is time to create some doable Absolve beauty goals for 2010 – ones that you not only can live with, but also have your beauty benefit as well.  Here is my top ways to a more beautiful, less guilty 2010!!

COME OUT OF THE CLOSET ~ Make a date with yourself to go into your closet, and once and for all get rid of all of your closet guilt.  Out with the stuff you never wear, too tight, too big, too ‘what what I thinking!’  Get it out of your closet, off your mind, and move on to loving getting dressed again!  WalnutPlatElfaFreeCloset_x

JUST SAY NO TO SO-SO ~ Declare this moment that from now on you are only going to wear clothes that make you look fabulous!  Done are the days of ‘just throwing something on for whatever’ and on are the days of looking confident, put-together and looking as beautiful on the outside as you feel on the inside for this brand new year!

TOOL TIME ~ Whether it is a blow dryer; brushes designed for your hair type;  hair rollers; exfoliator brush, sponge, or mitt; manicure kit; makeup brushes; makeup sponges; makeup mirror for home, or your handbag; full length mirror for your closet – whatever the beauty routine is, keep it professional!  Using a professionally designed tool – built for the particular beauty need, is totally worth its weight in gold.   Your pay off will be camera ready for any and all close ups ….as well as any far away paparazzi!

H2O = LIFE ~ Water is a truly wondrous thing.  It keeps you feeling full, hydrates your skin, keeps your organs humming, and rids the body of toxins effectively.  Drinking at lease 8 glasses daily, or more if your level of activity, warrants.  The word ‘spa’ literally means ‘taking of the waters.’  It is impossible to have a spa experience, let alone be beautiful without ‘taking of the waters’ for your own personal beauty.  Drink it daily for true inside and out beauty.

makeupMAKEUP TUNE-UP ~ Now is the perfect time to schedule yourself a makeup consultation.  Learn from the experts, see the latest trends, and experience how maybe just a tweak here and a blend there will keep you looking your sparkling best all year long.

GOOD SKIN IS ALWAYS IN STYLE ~ No amount of makeup, hair style, fashion or accessory will ever take the place of having healthy, beautiful skin.  Taking just a few minutes in the AM and in the PM to cleanse, tone, hydrate and nourish your skin is all it takes to keep your skin radiant and you looking your most beautiful!

OWN IT GIRLFRIEND ~ Make this year the year you live it, love it, and laugh it out loud!  Make 2010 a totally UN-Realistic year!

MAKEOVER MADNESS

Friday, June 26th, 2009

Things have certainly changed in the 40 plus years since Dionne Warwick’s song “Don’t Make Me Over,” was the number one song on Billboards top records hit chart.

woman-getting-makeup-brushes-everywhereToday just about every magazine, TV show, newspaper and newly launched beauty book author, are all singing – if not shouting – at the top of their lungs:  “Please… let us make you over!”  As I am writing this, I googled the word “makeover” and up came 3,810,000 hits!  Almost 4 million website pages with makeover information– that is incredible.

I have to admit that there is something magical in watching someone go from frumpy to fabulous seeming before our eyes, that is both fascinating – as well as encouraging – “if she can look that good, then I certainly can too!”  It is no wonder that the ‘Before and after Makeover’ has been around since 1980 (almost 30 years!) when the TV show, Sally Jesse Raphael, debuted the Makeover concept on her national TV show.  Even today millions of women, including myself, still turn on, tune in, or turn the pages, to see what we can do to change ourselves from ‘glum to glamorous’ in just a few easy to do steps.

A ‘Makeover,’ can be a good thing.  What I call a ‘Fakeover’is NOT the same  ~ by any stretch of the imagination, monalisamakeup-pix-for-blog

and is always a bad thing.  Fakeovers are makeovers gone crazy ala ‘extreme’ ~ while it may work for TV ratings, and magazine sales, in real life, I gotta tell you that I, nor any of the gals I know are dying to get lifted, lipo’d, lasered, beached, or teeth capped while on national TV.  Plus these crazy, some of the over the top TV shows, have gotten so extreme, that in my opinion, the recipients could qualify as a new witnesses in a government protection program. You have seen them.  The curtain  opens, the newly altered ‘after’ appears, and the loved ones are stunned, gapping mouths, with a ‘just who the heck is that woman? And what have they done to my wife, mom, sister, etc.’ look on their faces.

Makeovers on the other hand are subtle ways in which you enhance your appearance yet are still able to recognize yourself in the mirror.  Perhaps it is a new haircut, or adding highlights, or just a couple of updated makeup tweaks that help you look your best. A good makeover doesn’t require a full overhaul in most cases, but rather just a couple of refining methods to keep you looking and feeling radiant.

Most of us learned to put on our makeup in either high school or college, and even though we are not wearing the same clothes, driving the same car, or living in the same place as we did way back then, somehow we get stuck in a makeup time warp.  If you have not changed your look in the last five years ~ girlfriend, it shows!

makeup-58You can go to any department store cosmetics counter, spa or salon makeup artist and schedule a makeover appointment with an expert.  It won’t cost a lot of money, only about one hour of time, and the new updated techniques could take a few years off your age, bring out your sparkling eyes, or accentuate your luscious lips – now that is priceless!

If you want to see a makeover in action, I have created four free mini makeup videos to walk you through the how-to process.  Each focuses on a different part of the face:  skin condition; foundation, blush and powder; eyes; and the lips.  I invite you to sit back, relax, watch and learn how you can bring out your personal beauty best in a matter of minutes!  Click here to begin your beautiful makeover:  http://susiegalvez.com/beauty_tips.php

Enjoy!  And remember to always surround yourself with beauty!
